less than four minutes later, the rays would force extra innings after coming back from a 7-0 deficit against the yankees in a game everybody thought was over hours earlier, won the game with an evan longoria solo home run in the 12th inning. that swing, that comeback and the red sox lost in baltimore clinched the wild card spot for tampa bay and ened boston's season. in the national league if it weren't for the red sox collapse, the story would be that of the atlanta braves who fell apart in the final few weeks of the season. last night after st. louis beat the astros they watched as the braves gave up a gametime run in the ninth and another in the 13th to fall to the phillies, 4-3. that ended atlanta's season and put the cardinals into the playoffs. wow, what a night. we goal through the full highlights and get reaction from the red sox locker room and give you a playoff preview a bit later in sports.
we turn now to the news in the 2012 presidential race a new fox news poll shows former massachusetts governor, mitt romney, back in the lead of his fellow republican presidential hopeful. the support for texas governor, rick perry, slides. in the poll, romney leads all candidates with 23% support, basically unchanged from a month ago. he is followed by rick perry at 19%. look at that dip. 10% down from august. former godfather's pizza ceo, herman cain who just won the florida straw poll surging up 11 points getting 17% support in a statistic cal tie with rick perry. after romney admits a wave of enthusiasm, governor perry's campaign has stumbled mostly over a series of statements. >> if you say that we should not educate children who have come into our state for other reason than they have been brought there by no fault of their own,
i don't think you have a heart. >> yesterday, the interview with conservative news max tv. perry apologized for that comment and walked back from his stance on providing in-state tuition for the children of illegal immigrants. >> i probably chose a poor word to explain that for people who don't want their state to be giving tuition to illegal aliens, illegal immigrants in their country, that's their call. i respect that. i was probably a bit overpassionate by using that word and it was inappropriate. >> perry went over to say the decision for in-state tuition for the children of illegal immigrants is a state sovereign right to capitalize. meanwhile, herman cain went after perry yesterday. >> could you support rick perry if he were the nominee? >> today, i could not support
rick perry as the nominee for a host of reasons. him being soft on securing the border is one of the reasons. i feel very strongly about the need to secure the border for real, the need to enforce the laws that are already there, the need to promote the path to citizenship that is already there. that's where i think he and i have a basic fundamental difference of opinion. >> mr. cain raised some eyebrows when he spoke about african-american voters and their relationship with the republican party. >> many african-americans have been brain washed into not being open-minded, not even considering a conservative point of view. i have received some of that same vitriol simply because i am running for the republican nomination as a conservative. it is just brain washing and people not being open-minded, pure and simple. >> president obama addressing the issue of immigration at an interview yesterday the
president expressed his frustration with recent attempts to immigration reforms. >> this notion that somehow i c can change the laws unilaterally is just not true. there has been a great disservice done to the cause of getting the dream act passed and getting immigration passed by perpetrating the notion that somehow by myself i can go and do these things. it is just not true. we live in a democracy. you have to pass bills through the legislature and then i can sign it. >> in that same interview, president obama was asked about the prospects of a latino one day making it to the oval office? >> i am absolutely certain that within my lifetime we will have a latino candidate for president who is very competitive and may win. you just look at the demographics. latino population is growing
faster than any other population. with numbers comes political power. >> the latino vote likely to be one of the most crucial graphics in the 2012. president obama won two thirds of the hispanic vote nationwide. they are now seeing a substantial growth of hispanic voters. in florida, it grew by nearly 250,000 people between 2008 and 2010. in nevada, increased by 44,000 and new mexico saw a jump of 36,000 hispanic voters. speaking of florida, the sunshine state could soon shake up the republican primary calendar. as reports indicate, state officials are preparing to announce they will hold their primary on january 31st of this coming year. the move would force iowa, new hampshire, nevada and south carolina to reschedule their primaries at earlier dates if they wish to hold their contest before florida. the obama administration has
formally asked the supreme court to weigh in on their 2010 health care overall. a move was not expected until november. it makes it all but certain the court will agree to hear one or more cases involving challenges to that law and could have major implications in next year's presidential election. in explaining the request. the justice department said, throughout history, there have been similar challenges to other landmark legislation, such as the social security, civil rights and voting rights and all challenges failed. they continued. the administration is appealing a decision by the u.s. circuit court of appeals in atlanta which ruled the individual mandate portion of the law unconstitutional. it makes it likely the high court will issue a decision in june of next year in the thick of the 2012 presidential campaign. the fbi has arrested and
